IS UV SENSITIVITY ALSO DETERMINED BY FACTORS OTHER THAN PIGMENTATION?

Abstract-
UV sensitivity, the readiness of the skin to develop erythema and sunburn, varies greatly among people. Photosensitive patients with minimal erythema doses far below normal may have skins with or without pigmentation. The vascular reactivity to UV exposure is likely to be different also in persons with normal skin reactions. Another clearly important factor is the thickness of the epidermal layers. It governs the adaptation of the skin to increasing exposures to UV radiation. This, again, applies to skins with and without pigmentation. The two factors mentioned may well be more important than pigmentation in determining the UV sensitivity of the skin.
